Alvarez Gomez

For over 100 years, Álvarez Gómez has been synonymous with tradition, distinction, quality and unique style.
This saga begins when three young men (Herminio Álvarez Gómez, Berlarmino Gómez and Emilio Vuelta Gómez) decided to leave León, their homeland, and seek work and fortune in Madrid.

They started out in a drugstore owned by an acquaintance, located on the traditional Peligros Street. When the owner of the establishment decided to retire, they took the opportunity to take an important step in their future.

And in 1899, well established in their profession as aroma merchants, they moved to Calle Sevilla No. 2. The premises were opened with the Alvarez Gómez brand on the shop sign. In the back room, a pleasant and unique gathering began to take place, where the aromas of perfumery were mixed with those of tobacco and coffee. It was there that in 1912 one of the attendees contributed a formula for a European eau de cologne, whose essential components (lemon, bergamot, rosemary, geranium, etc.) could be obtained in better quality on Spanish soil. The founders, accustomed since childhood to the pure smells of the countryside, flowers and plants, decided that their cologne had to be like this: clean, refreshing and pure.

In 1912, the “Álvarez Gómez Concentrated Water Cologne” began to be produced by hand in the basement of this first shop, as we know it today; a unique, high-class but not elitist cologne. Its Art Deco bottle is a familiar sight, not only in many Spanish homes, but also in the best hotels and prestigious restaurants in our country.

Since the 1990s, with a new generation in charge, some of the most important milestones have been achieved: the construction of a factory in which production was standardized, the creation of a national distribution network, the professionalization of the different areas of the company, seeking to incorporate excellent professionals but without ever losing the family character of the company.

Today, a fourth generation, directly from that moment, one hundred years ago, is involved in the project of remaining relevant and current in the highly competitive world in which we move, betting on international expansion and the creation of new products. We are determined to make Álvarez Gómez the tradition of the new century.
